Backend Engineer

You will work as part of a cross-functional engineering team responsible for building and operating distributed backend systems. The platform handles complex pricing logic, billing workflows, and integrations, requiring a strong focus on correctness, scalability, and performance. You will own features end-to-end, from initial design through production deployment and ongoing support. You’ll ship code early, iterate frequently, review and discuss technical decisions with peers, and continuously improve platform robustness. The role also includes working closely with non-engineering teams to understand customer needs and translate them into technical solutions. The current stack includes Kotlin, Ktor, PostgreSQL, Kafka, and GCP, but the team values strong engineering fundamentals over specific tools.

5+ years of experience building backend systems using object-oriented languages (Kotlin or Java preferred) Experience designing and working with APIs and distributed systems Solid understanding of databases (e.g. PostgreSQL), containerisation (Docker), version control, and automated testing Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail Comfortable working in a collaborative, cross-functional environment Willingness to work on-site in Utrecht most days of the week
