We are looking for an Antenna Engineer to join our Service team and work at ESTEC’s premises in Noordwijk, Netherlands. The role is part of the Radio Frequency Payloads and Technology Division, offering an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of RF and optical communication systems for space applications. As a member of this team, you will contribute to the design, testing, and performance analysis of advanced payloads, instruments, antennas, and telemetry systems. You will play a key role in cutting-edge projects, tackling challenges in wave propagation, high-speed data transmission, and signal processing. Drawing on expertise across antennas, RF equipment, payload architecture, and wave interaction, the division supports ground-breaking ESA missions, and you could be a vital part of the innovation that shapes the future of space communications
What you'll bring
The following skills and experience are mandatory: Master’s degree or PhD in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field. Minimum 6 years of relevant professional experience. Strong knowledge of electromagnetic wave theory. Experience with space antenna architectures and technologies. Familiarity with RF, mechanical, thermal, and environmental constraints of space antennas, gained through flight hardware or high-TRL R&D activities. Knowledge of antenna design, manufacturing, and testing processes. Experience with antenna modelling tools (e.g. TICRA, Ansys, CST) and programming languages such as Python or MATLAB. Familiarity with antenna testing and measurement systems. Understanding of high-power effects in antenna systems. Ability to work independently and as part of an international, multicultural team. Solution-oriented mindset with strong communication skills. Fluent in written and spoken English. The following skills and experience would be highly desirable: Knowledge of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence applied to antenna engineering. About the company
The European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. As ESA’s largest test centre, it is responsible for the majority of space technology and spacecraft development through varying phases of production. Tasks and activities The scope of work will include: Analysing and characterising advanced antenna systems for spacecraft, including mini and CubeSats, and other platforms. Designing and developing innovative antenna solutions, including arrays, reflectors, lens antennas, and active RF systems. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to optimise antenna performance at subsystem and system level. Developing next-generation RF modelling and design tools, including the application of AI and Machine Learning techniques. Supporting the testing and validation of antennas, payloads, and instruments in both laboratory and operational environments. Characterising RF material properties across a range of operating conditions. Contributing to ESA working groups, international workshops, and conferences. Supporting technology development and harmonisation activities for reflector and array antennas. Ensuring activities are delivered in line with ISO 9001 quality standards.
