About the role
PhD Position Quantum Physics - Rare-earth Ion single Photon Emitter Creating quantum networks with rare-earth ions
Silicon-based microchips are the essential building block of modern electronic hardware, such as computers and cell phones. Can silicon also play a critical role in building the next generation of the internet - the quantum internet? In order to realize a fully functional and scalable quantum network, we are developing highly coherent single photon emitters using erbium ions operating in the telecom C-band and directly embedded in a solid state crystal, such as silicon. Crucially, we are able to realize high-quality light-matter interfaces and directly enhance the photon emission into an optical channel using photonic crystal cavities. By leveraging different isotopes for long-lived and programmable quantum registers, we are planning on realizing all the critical parts for a quantum network using fully integrated and highly scalable structures. In order to help us achieve our ambitious goals, we are looking for a talented and motivated person, with strong curiousity of rare-earth ion physics, single-emitters in solid-state systems or experimental AMO physics. The successful candidate will work in a dynamic team environment. At the Groeblacher Lab we have a vision: we thrive to be an inclusive place where a diverse mix of talented people want to come, to learn, to live their passion and do their best work. We are dedicated to promoting equality, creating a safe environment for everyone, and believe deeply in diversity of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, national origin, age, socioeconomic background and all the other fascinating characteristics that make us different. We truly think diversity is a strength and working in a diverse environment, and being exposed to a variety of perspectives makes us stronger scientists and better human beings. The Department of Quantum Nanoscience at the TU Delft is an exciting, collaborative environment with several world-renowned research groups. The department is focused on Quantum Theory, Quantum Information Science and Quantum Devices & Materials. The research is supported by state-of-the-art facilities, in particular the cleanroom facilities for realizing next-generation nanostructures. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn new experimental techniques (microfabrication, quantum optics, cryogenics, ...), to understand the underlying principles of single-photon emitters and to gain a deep knowledge in finite element simulation and advanced computer based experimentation. As a PhD student you will also be given the opportunity to supervise Master students and you will receive all the training allowing you to evolve into an independent scientist.
What you'll bring
Masters or equivalent in (applied) physics or engineering Deep understanding of quantum physics Curious and self-motivated Plus: Hands on experience with quantum optics experiments Experience with finite-element simulations Prior experience in nanofabrication and cryogenics
What's on offer
Doctoral candidates will be offered a 4-year period of employment in principle, but in the form of 2 employment contracts. An initial 1,5 year contract with an official go/no go progress assessment within 15 months. Followed by an additional contract for the remaining 2,5 years assuming everything goes well and performance requirements are met. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, increasing from €3204 - €4051 gross per month, from the first year to the fourth year based on a fulltime contract (38 hours), plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%. As a PhD candidate you will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School. The TU Delft Graduate School provides an inspiring research environment with an excellent team of supervisors, academic staff and a mentor. The Doctoral Education Programme is aimed at developing your transferable, discipline-related and research skills. The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. Will you need to relocate to the Netherlands for this job? TU Delft is committed to make your move as smooth as possible! The HR unit, Coming to Delft Service , offers information on their website to help you prepare your relocation. In addition, Coming to Delft Service organises events to help you settle in the Netherlands, and expand your (social) network in Delft. A Dual Career Programme is available, to support your accompanying partner with their job search in the Netherlands.
