Open role
Senior Gas Diffusion Electrode (GDE) Engineer
Ore Energy B.V.
About the role
At Ore Energy, we are on a mission to fundamentally expand the amount of energy society can reliably use, helping move civilization toward a more abundant energy future. We are doing this by developing long-duration, utility-scale iron-air batteries that provide safe, low-cost, multi-day energy storage for electricity grids and data centers. We are expanding our factory and product capabilities and are looking for a Senior Gas Diffusion Electrode (GDE) Engineer to join our Component Development team in Amsterdam. In this role, you will lead and drive the design, formulation, and scalable manufacturing of high-performance Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR) electrodes for our next-generation electrochemical energy storage systems. Operating at the intersection of electrochemistry, materials science, and scalable manufacturing, you will develop deep process insights, integrate advanced materials, and optimize gas diffusion electrode (GDE) durability and efficiency. This is a high-impact, hands-on technical leadership role for an experienced problem-solver who thrives in an active R&D scale-up environment where technical playbook boundaries are still being pushed. This role reports directly to our Head of Component Development, Kadir Özgün Köse .
What you'll do
GDE Strategy & Process Optimization: Spearhead the formulation, structural design, and manufacturing process development of GDEs, ensuring high reproducibility, performance, and industrial scalability. Formulation & Architecture Engineering: Establish, refine, and optimize GDE compositions, including catalyst/binder/support integration, hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance, porosity control, and mechanical stability. Transport & Durability Management: Lead technical investigations into gas transport, water management, and long-term degradation mechanisms under operational conditions relevant to alkaline metal–air systems. Electrochemical Characterization: Direct and conduct comprehensive electrochemical evaluations of GDEs, including ORR activity, transport analysis, EIS, LSV, CV, and long-term cycling/accelerated stress testing. Experimental Design & Structure-Property Mapping: Drive rigorous experimental design (DoE) frameworks to uncover, map, and tune complex structure-property-performance relationships across electrode variants. Cross-Functional System Integration: Collaborate closely with battery engineering, cell development, and manufacturing teams to integrate advanced GDEs into alkaline metal–air battery prototypes and validate system-level performance. Quality & Process Standards: Establish internal standards for process control, quality assurance, scale-up protocols, and data-driven optimization loops for electrode manufacturing.
What you'll bring
Experience: 5+ years of hands-on experience in gas diffusion electrode (GDE) development, formulation, fabrication, and air-electrode performance optimization in an industrial or advanced R&D setting. Education: PhD or Master's degree in Electrochemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. Fundamental Understanding: Deep technical mastery of GDE architectures, including multi-phase transport, porosity control, wetting characteristics, and electrochemical degradation mechanisms. Electrochemical Characterization: Advanced proficiency in GDE half-cell testing, Linear Sweep Voltammetry (LSV), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), and durability studies. Data-Driven Execution: Proven track record of translating complex experimental data into actionable, scalable improvements for material formulations and manufacturing processes. Industry Background (Preferred): Demonstrated background in alkaline metal–air batteries, fuel cells, or oxygen-electrode energy storage systems. Experience with catalyst-supported air electrodes and design for manufacturability (scale-up) is a strong advantage. Communication & Leadership: Flawless professional English. Exceptional communication, mentoring, and technical leadership skills with a collaborative, solution-oriented approach.
About the company
The Challenge We Are Solving Do you want to contribute to one of the most important challenges of our time: accelerating the energy transition? Are you excited by breakthrough energy storage technology with real-world impact? Would you like to be part of a mission-driven company where your work directly contributes to building the future of clean energy? Then we are looking for you. Ore Energy develops long-duration energy storage solutions to support a reliable, zero-carbon electricity system. Powering the Next Generation of Infrastructure The electricity grid is undergoing its most significant transformation in a century. As renewables become the cheapest source of new power, the challenge is no longer producing clean energy, it is making it reliably available when and where it is needed, regardless of when the sun shines or the wind blows. Our iron-air batteries are uniquely designed to store renewable energy over multi-day periods, allowing clean electricity to become a dependable, around-the-clock backbone of the grid while reducing reliance on fossil-fuel peaker plants and building a more resilient, fully decarbonized power system. This is a rare opportunity to join a company at the moment when technology readiness, customer traction, and market demand are converging. Ore Energy has already raised significant capital, built and tested its technology under real-world conditions, and is now moving toward large-scale commercial deployment. As we transition into this industrial implementation phase, we are building the team, systems, and capabilities required to scale our solution and help define how long-duration storage powers both the future grid and the next generation of industry and data infrastructure. Our Culture & Beliefs We believe impactful technology is built by talented people who are motivated by complex challenges, scientific rigour and strong execution. That is why we are looking for dedicated professionals who want to help shape a cleaner and more resilient energy future. At Ore Energy, we are committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace where every individual has the opportunity to thrive. We believe that diversity of thought, background, and experience drives innovation and success. Are you unsure if you meet all the requirements? Please do apply, we’d love to hear from you! Your unique perspective and skills could be exactly what we’re looking for. Apply for this job
