For a large financial institution in Amsterdam, we are looking for a Senior Java Engineer Global Customer Data Management. In this role, you will work on high-quality, scalable and business-critical solutions for global customer data management.
You will join an international agile environment where customer data plays a central role. The systems you develop and maintain are used across retail, business and wholesale banking and must be available 24/7. This is an assignment for an experienced Java Engineer who enjoys taking ownership of software quality, technical direction and production reliability.
Please note: this assignment is only available on a secondment basis. Freelancers/self-employed professionals cannot be submitted directly. If you are self-employed, we can discuss whether working through secondment is possible.
What you'll do
As a Senior Java Engineer, you will be part of a multidisciplinary and international agile team responsible for developing, maintaining and operating the systems it builds. You will be involved in the full development lifecycle: from refining user stories to monitoring software in production.
You will work on Java Spring Boot APIs within a modern architecture where speed, scalability, reliability and maintainability are key. The codebase is shared across the organisation and an inner source model is used, allowing other teams to contribute as well.
The technology stack includes Java 21, Spring Boot, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Neo4J, DB2, Kafka and an IBM MDM solution. The architecture follows a hexagonal approach and the teams work according to principles such as Domain Driven Design, BDD, TDD and clean code.
In this role, you will be responsible for:
Designing, building and maintaining Java Spring Boot APIs.
Developing reusable code components and libraries.
Working with NoSQL databases such as Neo4J, Cassandra and Elasticsearch.
Refining user stories together with business stakeholders and team members.
Ensuring software quality through TDD, BDD, DDD and clean code principles.
Monitoring and supporting software in production.
Resolving incidents and contributing to structural improvements.
Advising on technical direction and architecture choices.
Coaching and mentoring less experienced team members.
Participating in an on-call schedule outside office hours, approximately one week every one to two months.
What you'll bring
For this role, we are looking for a senior engineer with strong Java experience, a DevOps mindset and the drive to continuously improve technical quality.
You bring:
At least 8 years of experience with Java and Spring technologies.
Strong experience with Java 21 and Spring Boot APIs.
Experience with software best practices such as TDD, BDD, DDD and clean code.
Experience running software in production, including monitoring and incident resolution.
Experience with streaming technologies such as Kafka.
Experience with NoSQL and/or database technologies such as Neo4J, DB2, Cassandra and Elasticsearch.
Experience in a corporate and/or financial agile environment.
Experience with DevOps, Scrum or similar agile ways of working.
The ability to take technical ownership and provide direction.
The ability to coach and mentor less experienced engineers.
Experience with Neo4J is a strong plus.
Nice to have
It is a plus if you have experience with:
AI tools such as GitHub Copilot.
Working with agents, skills or similar AI-supported development environments.
Previous experience within ING or a comparable large banking environment.
Team Topologies, BizDevOps or Spotify-inspired organisational models.
Why this role?
You will work on a global customer data platform that directly impacts services across multiple banking domains. The environment is technically challenging, large-scale and business-critical. You will have the opportunity to not only build features, but also influence architecture, quality, team development and technical standards.
