About the role
UX Consultant: Data Platform Portal
A large enterprise data and analytics platform has a front door: the portal where internal teams request access, configure their data products, track status and find help. The technical foundations are built. What it does not yet have is a deliberate user experience.
That is the assignment. You define the information architecture, shape the onboarding journey, and establish the UI patterns that engineering teams can build against instead of reinventing. This is consultancy, not production work: you set and validate the design direction and advise the engineers, you do not write front-end code.
The design direction for the portal is genuinely still open, which is unusual at this stage. Your recommendations will set it.
The environment
Our client is an international bank, and the platform in question is used by teams across the organisation. You would work with the team that owns onboarding and support for it, with short lines to the engineers actually building the portal.
Your users are internal and reachable, so validation loops run in days rather than months. It is a regulated setting with a lot of stakeholders, which is part of the design problem: the journey has to be intuitive and still respect constraints that are not going away.
What you'll do
Review and improve the portal's information architecture, navigation structure and page hierarchy, and align flows with how people actually work.
Formulate and visualise the UX flow for the platform's user journey, prototype alternatives, and validate with users to find the strongest one.
Recommend a design system direction, weighing the in-house options against an off-the-shelf library, within React-based technical constraints.
Review the proof-of-concept screens and name the key UX risks and the areas with the most room for improvement.
Define consistent UI patterns and interaction principles.
Structure the core reusable components: multi-step dynamic forms with conditional logic, validation and error handling, status tracking and notifications, and elements such as cards, tables and dashboards.
Evaluate the portal on clarity, findability and feedback behaviour.

What you'll bring
Must-haves
UX research across qualitative and quantitative methods, translated into personas that hold up.
Strong Figma skills across the full range, from wireframe to interactive prototype.
Hands-on usability testing, and the discipline to iterate on what the tests actually say.
A proven track record structuring the information architecture of complex enterprise portals.
Journey design that simplifies workflows without pretending organisational constraints do not exist.
Experience working inside an enterprise design system rather than starting from a blank canvas.
Nice to have
Accessibility evaluation experience.
You translate business and technical input into concrete UX decisions, and you can defend those decisions to stakeholders and engineers alike. In an organisation this size, being right is not enough; you also have to bring people with you.
Good to know
This is an interim assignment on a freelance basis.
The role is hybrid, based in the Utrecht region.
Working language is English.
