About the role

Lead Data Analyst / Senior Power BI Developer: Data Modelling & Reporting

Reporting that people actually act on. The brief here is not to produce more dashboards but better ones: reliable, fast, scalable, and built so that a stakeholder opening them sees what to do next rather than only what happened. A significant part of the work serves identity and access management and audit purposes, where the numbers have to stand up to scrutiny.

It is a hands-on senior role. You design and improve the data models underneath the reports, dig into existing queries to work out what the business logic is really doing, and go after the performance problems that others have learned to live with.

The environment

You would work alongside business analysts and other stakeholders, as the person with the deepest Power BI and modelling knowledge in the room. That brings an expectation: not just building what is asked, but questioning whether the requirement behind the request makes sense.

There are less experienced colleagues on the team who would benefit from having you around. This is explicitly not a management position. The team is looking for technical weight, not another layer of hierarchy.

What you'll do

Build and improve reliable, scalable Power BI reporting, including for IAM and audit purposes.

Design star schemas and complex data models, and improve the ones already in place.

Analyse existing SQL queries, understand the business logic inside them, and optimise.

Troubleshoot and tune complex reports that have outgrown their original design.

Make dashboards actionable, so stakeholders leave with a decision rather than a number.

Help less experienced colleagues get better at the craft.

Tech stack

Core: Power BI · DAX · SQL, preferably Databricks SQL · Azure Databricks · dimensional and star-schema modelling

Also in the mix: Performance Analyzer · DAX Studio · Tabular Editor · Azure DevOps · Visual Studio Code · Python

What you'll bring

Must-haves

Deep hands-on Power BI experience, including DAX, performance optimisation and troubleshooting genuinely complex reports.

The diagnostic tooling to back that up: Performance Analyzer and DAX Studio.

Strong SQL, preferably Databricks SQL, with the independence to analyse an existing query, understand what it is doing for the business, and improve it.

Data modelling you can do on your own: star schemas, complex models, and a real grasp of relationships, filter context, measures and performance.

Azure DevOps and Visual Studio Code in daily use.

The seniority to add value from day one and pick up technical problems before anyone assigns them.

Nice to have

Tabular Editor.

Knowledge of IAM principles, authorisations and access rights. Useful, not a deal-breaker.

Python. Not a hard requirement.

You are critical and analytical, you look past the requirement to the question behind it, and you are comfortable challenging stakeholders and business analysts when the ask does not hold up. You see the dependencies others miss, and you make the people around you better without needing a title to do it.
